Tyrique Charles

Wheels give boy a new life - Hermanus Times, Thursday, 29 December 2011

A young disabled boy from Mt Pleasant Primary School is mobile thanks to a group of people who worked together to make it possible.

Magda Rosenthal of the Benard Centre of Learning Trust, which is involved with Mount Pleasant community, realised that Tyrique Charles' life would vastly improve if he were to become mobile.

She approached the Rotary Club of Hermanus for assistance.  Colin Adams of Rotary made contact with Honey Richter of the Rachel Swart Fund for people with disabilities.  The trustees of this fund agreed to sponsor a wheelchair for Tyrique.

The specially adapted wheelchair arrived just in time for Christmas. "What an incredible present for Tyrique," said the Rotarians. "Thank you Magda, Honey, Mark and your team.  Rotary is proud to have been able to assist.

Naidoo Pathmanathan

Is a resident at Chatsworth Cheshire Home. He is a paraplegic who had both legs amputated due to diabetes. He also suffers from arthritis in his shoulders and fingers. Currently he used a standard chair which he found hard to wheel and was always dependent on others to push him around. His only source of income is a disability grant and therefore he was not able to afford a motorized wheelchair which he needed to be independent. An application was submitted from Vernon Shunmugan, social worker at the Cheshire Village. The motorized wheelchair was bought for him.

PIET (54) of Riversdale suffers from a spinal cord injury after being assaulted. (A legal claim is being handled by a lawyer.) This left him with paralyzed arms and legs.

Patrick, from the Strand, travels long distances in his wheelchair to do community outreach work, including going to a workgroup of disabled people doing contract work for projects which he organizes for them.
