Hermanus Race
Memorable Wheels and Runners

The third annual Hermanus Wheels and Runners Race took place on Saturday 9 May in perfect sunny weather - supported by hundreds of spectators who lined the route and encouraged the competitors.

This event is the only fully integrated wheelchairs and runners race in South Africa, where able-bodied runners and people with disabilities in wheelchairs compete. A record number of athletes participated this year with groups from as far afield as Richmond, Graaf Reinet, Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn, Free State, George and Mossel Bay competing. The race, which attracted 180 athletes in 2007, and grew to 325 in 2008, attracted 513 athletes this year. Mr Boyd from Huis Lettie Theron was the oldest competitor and celebrated his 89th birthday on 6 May.

The 21.1km, 10km and 5km races, although extremely competitive, was enjoyed by all and provided a few hair raising moments on some parts of the course with runners having to give way to the speedy "hand cycles, racing chairs and tricycles". The 4.3 km fun walk was enjoyed by over 150 competitors and helpers who enjoyed each others company while enjoying the scenic route with its beautiful views of the sea and mountains surrounding Hermanus.

Checkers, the sponsor of the race since its inception, once again showed their commitment to this unique event and reinforced their support of a wheelchair friendly environment.
